Rose Hips on the Tree of Life

P1300929.JPG “If the rose is burnt, it bears better flowers; for then, they say, the roses are improved.” This phoenix-like characteristic of the rose may be why the Persians traditionally depicted the tree of life as a rose tree on their carpets and tapestries. Rose hips can contain between 1500-2500 grams of Vitamin C per 100 grams of weight. Oranges contain around 53 mgs per 100 grams of weight, so head for the hills to collect these vitamin C powerhouses gifts from the bush. more

Mankinds Old Friend Fenugreek (Methi)

Fenugreek is easy to sprout and the sprouts make a spicy, crisp addition to any meal. Soaked in water and rinsed periodically for 4-5 days, fenugreek sprouts are high in vitamin A, C and B as well as iron, calcium, silicon, selenium and high levels of protein, most notably the amino acid 4-hydroxyisoleucine which increases production of insulin when blood sugar is high, making it very useful for treating diabetes. A strange side effect of sprouting fenugreek is the strong maple syrup (with celery undertones) aroma the seeds release as they soak up the water. Fenugreek is also used to make maple-syrup flavor, which has caused outbreaks of distress in New York City since its first mass smelling in October of 2005. MORE

For Gen X Eyes Only

I submit that Generation X is a generation of Fedayeen, sleeper agents who are now in place and, when the time is right, will spring into action to the astonishment of all the experts. Everyone is hoping we will not realize how much economic power we have. Collectively, Generation X has the most amount of debt for education, medical bills, and credit cards than has yet been seen in our world. We have always been a wild card. Part of the frustration that we have seen in psychoanalysts take on our generation is because they never could figure us out.

The Rose to Shamballa

P1290086In Vancouver the cherry blossoms are in mid-swing. We had a ferociously windy storm last night and the light pink blossoms of the first batch were cleaned out of town. I was astonished to see that even the sidewalks had none of the pink confetti of fallen blossoms on them. The dark pink buds of the next batch are on the verge of opening, in a couple days they will be showing us their amazingly pink fluffy selves.

As a result, I have been exploring the rose family Rosaceae. This family has a deep connection to the heart—just inhaling their perfume will strengthen it. read more.

Instincts and Sugar

On Easter Monday (April 13, 2009) we finally stepped out of the house and went on an excursion. The cherry blossoms are out in Vancouver and Spring is finally in the air. We hadn't been out in months. We decided to head down to False Creek and check out how the building of the Olympic Village was going.

P1290537Along the walk I kept getting Midnight Oil's song Blue Sky Mine popping into my head. To be honest I am not sure if this happened before or after I took the photos of the old Canadian Sugar Refinery Building, but it probably doesn't really matter. I found it interesting that this song kept nagging at me as it has been a very long time since I have heard music in my head like this.

Walls Have Eyes - surrealist film shot in Rangoon, Burma
Video sent by zzzeroX

A surreal short film created without any script or plan. A room attendant in a hotel in Rangoon, Myanmar (Burma) is chased through a wormhole and killed by an invisible entity. An exploration into the space-time distortion of film and video in a place where ghosts are still very real.

A practical call to join the delicious revolution. To take back our future from multi-national corporations we must defend our seeds. To do this we need the support of Mother Earth which we receive when our hands are deep in her rich soil.

Demonstrating how easy it is to make healthy, live-cultured yogurt from fresh raw goat's milk.

This slow/low heat method ensures that the enzymes and cultures will remain available for intestinal health. More information.

Also shows three methods of incubation. The towel method is the one I use-the cooler is much more hassle than it is worth!

The cute goats who provided the fresh milk live at M and S Farm, 5814 Route 42, Fallsburg, NY.

Step back in time and experience the sweet goodness of maple syrup. In this old-fashioned sugar house, sap collected from surrounding maple trees is reduced to rich syrup in an wood-fired evaporator.

Maple syrup is an excellent alternative to processed or chemical sweetners. The Muthig's maple syrup tastes of deep roots, love and the wild beauty of the Catskills. This sugar house is well worth a visit in February or March when the temperature is right, the sap is running and the oven jumping.
Location: Muthig Sugar House, 681 Muthig Road, Parksville, New York 12768.

This signature Burmese side dish is usually made with dried shrimp powder. This version with only peanuts is served for vegetarians and can be made more or less spicy according to taste.

A purely addictive combination of flavors. An excellent protein complement condiment for rice. It also makes a nice topping for salads or soups.
